Understanding your wisdom teeth

Many patients ask whether wisdom teeth are really necessary since so many people have them removed.

The fact is that wisdom teeth are a valuable asset to the mouth when they are healthy and properly positioned.

However, problems can occur that sometimes make it better to have them removed.

For example, when the jaw isn’t large enough, the wisdom teeth can become impacted – misaligned or unable to grow in properly. They may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

The reasons wisdom teeth may have to be extracted include:
– The teeth have only partially erupted. This leaves an opening for bacteria which cause infection.
– There is a chance the wisdom teeth will damage adjacent teeth.
– A cyst forms which may destroy surrounding structures such as bone or tooth roots.

Ask your dentist about the health and positioning of your wisdom teeth.

Your dentist will tell you if there are any issues and will recommend any steps needed.

How sedation and general anesthesia can make your visit to the dentist easier

While local anesthetics are often used in dental treatment, there is sometimes a need for anti-anxiety agents – such as nitrous oxide – or sedatives to help people relax during dental visits.

Dentists may use these agents to induce “minimal or moderate sedation”.

In this case, the patient reaches a relaxed state during treatment but can respond to speech or touch.

Sedatives can be administered before, during or after dental procedures by mouth, inhalation or injection.

More complex treatments may require drugs that can induce “deep sedation”.

This reduces consciousness and causes a loss of feeling which helps to reduce both pain and anxiety.

Sometimes patients undergo “general anesthesia” where the drugs lead to a temporary loss of consciousness.

A dentist may recommend deep sedation or general anesthesia for certain procedures with children or with adults who have severe anxiety or for people who have difficulty controlling their movements.

While these techniques to control pain and anxiety are used to treat tens of millions of patients safely every year, it’s important that you let your dentist know anything that might affect your ability to benefit from them for example, tell them about any illnesses or health conditions, whether you are taking any medications and if you’ve had any problems with allergic reactions to medications.

Choosing the right toothbrush for your needs

It would be easy to get overwhelmed by the huge range of dental care products now available.

Even looking just at toothbrushes present a wide range of choices.

There are hundreds of manual and powered toothbrushes to choose from.

Start by looking for products that carry the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance – this is an important symbol of a the product’s safety and effectiveness.

When you buy a toothbrush, replace it every three to four months. Replace it sooner if the bristles become frayed as a worn toothbrush will not clean your teeth properly.

Make it easy for your children to brush their teeth by choosing a child-sized toothbrush and make it more interesting for them by selecting fun colors and designs.

Often people who have difficulties with hand, arm or shoulder movements find that powered toothbrushes are the best choice. However, it’s also possible to make a few small changes to modify a manual toothbrush and make it easier to use.

For example, you can:

– Enlarge the handle with a sponge, rubber ball, or bicycle handle grip
– Lengthen the handle with a piece of wood or plastic
– Bend the handle slightly while running it under hot water

Your dentist will give you tips on what toothbrushes would be right for your needs.

Taking steps to stop oral cancer before it’s too late

Oral cancer hits more than 30,000 Americans every year but you can minimize the risk by taking steps to ensure it’s caught early enough.

The first indications of oral cancer may be a very small, but dangerous, oral spot or sore that you are not even aware of.

In a routine examination, your dentist will carefully examine the inside of your mouth and tongue.

If they notice a flat, painless, white or red spot or a small sore, this may be completely harmless. But harmful spots or sores often look the same as harmless ones.

To ensure that a spot or sore is not dangerous, your dentist may choose to perform a simple test, such as a brush test. This collects cells from the lesion which can them be analyzed.

Any positive results from a brush test must usually be confirmed by a biopsy before deciding the next step.

If precancerous cells are found, the lesion can be surgically removed if necessary during a separate procedure.

When caught early enough, the chances of preventing the cancer developing are high but only half of those diagnosed survive more than five years.

That’s why regular dental examinations are so important for your overall health and not just to have good teeth.

Different types of dentist and how they help your oral care

While many people see dentists as the single group of people who look after the health of your teeth and mouth, there are various specialist categories that help you in different ways.

The categorization of a dentist will depend on their education, training and experience.

Here are some of the main specialist areas of dentistry:

Endodontics: Concerned with the dental pulp – the part in the center of a tooth made up of living soft tissue and cells and root canal therapy

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology: This deals with the identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: Deals with the production and interpretation of images and data produced by radiant energy that are used for the diagnosis and management of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral and maxillofacial region

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the tissues including extractions, facial surgery and implants

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics: Mainly deals with diagnosis, prevention and treatment of misaligned teeth and modification of midface and mandibular growth

Pediatric Dentistry: Provides preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence.

Periodontics: Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth and the maintenance of the health, function and esthetics of these structures and tissues. Most periodontist place implants

Prosthodontics: Diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues. Includes dentures, bridges and the restoration of implants.

Plus, of course, general dentists provide everyday care and many specialist services to maintain your oral health.

Is it safe to have an X-ray while pregnant?

Some women worry about whether it’s safe to have an X-ray exam while they are pregnant.

This can cause them to put off treatment they need.

However, untreated dental infections can pose a risk to the fetus, and dental treatment may be necessary to maintain the health of the mother and child. Sometimes this will mean an X-ray is necessary.

Radiation from dental X-rays is extremely low but every precaution is taken to minimize radiation exposure.

For example, a leaded apron reduces exposure to the abdomen and should be used when a dental radiograph is taken.

In addition, a leaded thyroid collar can protect the thyroid from radiation, and should be used whenever possible. The use of a leaded thyroid collar is strongly recommended for women of childbearing age, pregnant women and children.

Overall there is no reason to avoid dental radiographs (X-rays) while pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant.

Follow your dentist’s advice and ask questions if you have any concerns.

Why cavities aren’t just for kids

Tooth decay or cavities result from destruction of the tooth enamel and can lead to a range of problems from toothache to bad breath.

Cavities occur when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as milk, sugared drinks, cakes or candy are frequently left on the teeth.

Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay.

Many people associate cavities with children but the changes that occur with aging make cavities an adult problem, too.

Recession of the gums away from the teeth, combined with an increased incidence of gum disease, can expose tooth roots to plaque.

Tooth roots are covered with cementum, a softer tissue than enamel. They are susceptible to decay and are more sensitive to touch and to hot and cold. The majority of people over age 50 have tooth-root decay.

Decay around the edges of fillings is also common to older adults. As many of them did not benefit from fluoride and modern preventive dental care when they were younger, they often have a number of dental fillings.

Over the years, these fillings may weaken, fracture and leak around the edges.

Bacteria accumulate in these tiny crevices causing acid to build up which leads to decay.

You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:

– Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
– Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental cleaner
– Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking

It’s also worth asking your dentist about supplemental fluoride, which strengthens your teeth, and about dental sealants, a plastic protective coating which is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from decay.

In addition, it’s important to visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral examination.

Building a strong relationship with your dentist

You’ll give yourself the best chance of good oral health if you build a strong relationship with your dentist.

That can sometimes mean asking the right questions and helping them to assist you in the best way possible.

So you want to make sure you have a dentist who will first of all explain techniques that you should use to help prevent dental health problems. They should be willing to show you step-by-step what you need to do.

You should also choose a dentist who is willing to take time to answer your questions, especially when they are recommending a course of treatment.

If you don’t understand any part of what your dentist recommends, don’t be afraid to ask for more information.

You may want to ask if there are other options to the solution they recommend. For example:

– How do the options differ in cost?
– Which solution will last the longest?
– Do all the options solve the problem?

Ask the dentist which treatments are absolutely necessary, which are elective and Which are cosmetic.

Ask which procedures are urgently needed, and which ones are less urgent. Your dentist will help you prioritize between problems which need immediate attention and those that are less urgent.

Often, treatment can be planned over a period of time but make sure you understand any consequences of delaying treatment.

It’s naturally also important to make sure that you are given full information about fees and payment plans before treatment is scheduled.

How Gum Disease Makes You More Susceptible to Viruses

Gum disease is a condition that can occur at any age and even in healthy adults. It is prevalent in the US, according to a CDC report. About 47% of adults 30 years old and above have some form of periodontitis (gum disease) that also increases with age.

The same report states that adults 65 and older (about 70.1%) have it.

Gum Disease Affects Your Health

Studies show that gum disease may worsen any health condition because it’s a bacterial infection, which could spread throughout the body, if untreated. The bacteria responsible release toxins that travel into the bloodstream, causing inflammation and clogging of the arteries. This condition may increase one’s risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. And if you have diabetes, periodontitis may worsen it because the gums are inflamed, and this inflammation can increase blood sugar levels. And as your body fights the gum disease, diabetes can be harder to manage.

What is Interferon and Why is it Important?

Interferon is considered to be our body’s first immune response in the oral cavity. It is a naturally-occurring substance in the body that fights infection and diseases, like cancer. Interferon plays a huge part in our body’s natural defense against pathogenic infections and diseases, including the Coronavirus. When our body is infected by pathogens, including viruses, cells release interferon as part of the body’s defense system. There is a specific type of interferon, which is generated by cells in your mouth. These specialized proteins protect us from both viral and bacterial infection. But here’s the problem: Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), the primary pathogen causing periodontitis (gum disease), makes interferon less effective in shielding us from viral and bacterial infections. These oral pathogens prevent the infected gum cells from alerting the immune system.

Gum Disease Makes You More Susceptible to Viruses

Research has shown that the presence of P. gingivalis can suppress the production of interferon and make people more susceptible to viral infection. What’s even worse, P. gingivalis can shut down immune responses in patients suffering from periodontitis and therefore increase the severity of the original periodontitis.

How Do You Prevent Gum Disease?

Having an oral hygiene routine that provides regular attention to your mouth will you’re your gums healthy. And that will strengthen your immune system so that it can better protect you from viral (and bacterial) infection. Here are some oral care tips:

Brush teeth twice daily.

Quit smoking – because it increases the risk of gum disease.

Eat a well-balanced diet, particularly a fiber-rich diet.

Use an oral irrigator daily. Oral irrigation is more effective than flossing. Our favorite is Hydro Floss, an innovative oral irrigation system that has helped many patients improve their oral health, using plain tap water! Use our code (14031) to save money when you purchase.

Replace your toothbrush every few months.

Visit your dentist regularly, at least twice a year, recommends the American Dental Association, but you should visit more often if you have a history of gum disease.

Prevention is STILL the key to keep gum disease away. Take care of your oral health to improve your immune system and its ability to effectively protect you from any disease.

Maintaining proper nutrition as an older adult

Maintaining proper nutrition is important for everyone, young or old but many older adults find it difficult to eat a balanced diet.

They may avoid meats, raw vegetables and fresh fruits because they have trouble chewing or swallowing.

These problems can be caused by painful teeth, ill-fitting dentures, dry mouth or changes in facial muscles.

Others find their sense of taste has changed, sometimes due to a disease or certain medications.

As a result, older adults often have diets lacking in calcium, protein and other nutrients essential to dental and overall health.

A balanced diet has to be based on the five food groups:

  •  Milk and dairy products
  •  Breads and cereals
  •  Meats and dried beans
  •  Fruits
  •  Vegetables

Sometimes a multi-vitamin or mineral supplement will help but it’s best to use supplements only after discussion with your physician.

If your teeth are stopping you from eating the food you enjoy – or that you need for good health – your dentist will be able to help you find a solution.

What dentists are doing to improve services for older adults

As people are living longer and enjoying good health for many years, dentists are increasingly offering improved services to recognize the special needs of older adults.

This growing segment of the population is wearing fewer dentures and they are keeping their natural teeth longer. They are also concerned to maintain good health and a great smile for many years.

However, patients in this group sometimes require special consideration because reduced mobility and dexterity may make daily oral hygiene difficult.

And certain medical conditions and impairment may make them more anxious when visiting the dentist.

For example, problems with vision or hearing loss may cause worry. Always let the dentist and staff know if you have any concerns so that they can adjust their treatment and their pace to meet your needs.

Older patients can sometimes put up with problems such as toothaches, bleeding gums and clicking dentures because they are not aware of the wide range of treatments and techniques now available.

Dentists are increasingly sensitive to the special needs of and the importance of dental health in the older patient.

As many older patients are more health conscious than ever before, regular visits to the dentist ensure their oral health is an important part of their overall health.

Treating facial pain and jaw problems

Chronic facial pain is a problem faced by millions of Americans.

Common symptoms can include pain in or around the ear, tenderness of the jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth or even head and neck aches.

If you are suffering from this type of pain, your dentist can help identify its source with a thorough exam and appropriate x-rays.

Sometimes, the problem is a sinus or toothache or it could be an early stage of periodontal disease.

But for some pain, the cause is not so easily diagnosed.

There are two joints and several jaw muscles which make it possible to open and close the mouth. They work together when you chew, speak, and swallow.

These structures include muscles and ligaments, as well as the jaw bone, the mandible (lower jaw) with two joints, the TMJ’s.

Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working together properly may result in a painful TMJ disorder.

There are several ways the TMJ disorders may be treated.

Diagnosis is an important step before treatment.

Part of your clinical examination includes checking the joints and muscles for tenderness, clicking, popping or difficulty moving.

Your dentist may take x-rays and may make a “cast” of your teeth to see how your bite fits together.

To help you deal with this pain, your dentist will recommend what type of treatment you need and may refer you to a specialist.

The keys to keeping your mouth healthy

A healthy mouth is a good indication of your overall health and helps you to keep a great smile and continue eating what you want for many years to come.

There are a few steps you can take to make sure your mouth is as healthy as possible:

  •  Brush your teeth twice a day using a good quality toothbrush
  •  Renew your toothbrush regularly. It will only keep your mouth healthy if the brush is in good condition and the bristles are strong. You should replace it at least every three or four months
  •  Clean between your teeth. Your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere and bacteria can linger between the teeth so it’s important to clean between them every day using floss or an interdental cleaner
  •  Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleaning and oral examinations

Your dentist will be able to give you tips on what other products you should consider to help improve your oral health.

For example, antimicrobial mouth rinses and toothpastes can reduce the germs in your mouth and reduce the risk of gum disease.

Also, fluoride mouth rinses can help reduce and prevent tooth decay. Studies have shown that using mouth rinses provides valuable protection over and above that provided by fluoride toothpaste alone.

Look out for the ADA seal when buying toothbrushes and other dental products. This is a sign that the product has met American Dental Association standards for safety and effectiveness.

Following these steps can help ensure that you continue to enjoy great oral health.

What is holistic dentistry? A beginner's guide

Holistic dentistry is an alternative approach to traditional dental care that emphasizes the connection between oral health and overall wellness. It takes into account the whole person, including physical, emotional, and spiritual health, in order to provide personalized care that supports the body's natural healing processes.

Unlike traditional dental practices that focus solely on treating the symptoms of dental problems, holistic dentists work to identify and address the root causes of oral health issues. This can include factors such as diet, stress, and environmental toxins, as well as the impact of emotional and spiritual health on dental health.

Holistic dentistry also places a strong emphasis on the use of natural and non-toxic materials in dental treatments. For example, holistic dentists may use ozone therapy to treat cavities instead of traditional fillings that contain mercury. They may also recommend herbal remedies and natural mouthwashes to promote oral health.

Another key aspect of holistic dentistry is the use of minimally invasive and gentle techniques to minimize discomfort and trauma during dental procedures. This can include the use of laser dentistry, which is less invasive than traditional drilling methods, as well as the use of acupuncture and other alternative therapies to manage pain and anxiety.

Overall, holistic dentistry is a patient-centered approach to dental care that recognizes the importance of treating the whole person, rather than just the teeth and gums. It offers a more natural and personalized approach to oral health that can help you achieve optimal dental and overall wellness.

Why dry mouth can be a problem and what to do about it

Your saliva plays an important role in your oral health and reduced saliva flow can lead to health problems.

Reduced saliva flow can lead to a dry mouth and this is a common problem among older adults.

It can be caused by various medical disorders and is often a side effect of medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, pain killers and diuretics.

Dry mouth can be associated with various problems such as a constant sore throat, burning sensation, problems speaking, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or dry nasal passages.

Drying irritates the soft tissues in the mouth, which can make them inflamed and more susceptible to infection. Without the cleansing effects of saliva, tooth decay and other oral health problems become more common.

So, if dry mouth is not treated, it can damage your teeth.

Without adequate saliva to lubricate your mouth, wash away food, and neutralize the acids produced by plaque, extensive decay can occur.

Your dentist can recommend various methods to restore moisture. Sugar-free candy or gum stimulates saliva flow, and moisture can be replaced by using artificial saliva and oral rinses.

Gum Disease: Types, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common dental problem that affects millions of people worldwide. It is caused by bacteria that form on the teeth and gums, leading to inflammation and damage to the surrounding tissues. In this blog, we will discuss the types, symptoms, and treatment options for gum disease.

Types of gum disease

There are two main types of gum disease:

  1. Gingivitis: This is the milder form of gum disease and is characterized by inflammation of the gums. Symptoms include red, swollen, and bleeding gums.

  2. Periodontitis: This is a more severe form of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss. It occurs when the bacteria that cause gingivitis spread to the bone and other tissues that support the teeth.

Symptoms of gum disease

The symptoms of gum disease may vary depending on the severity of the condition. Some common symptoms include:

  1. Red, swollen, or tender gums

  2. Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing

  3. Receding gums

  4. Loose teeth

  5. Persistent bad breath

  6. Changes in bite or the way teeth fit together

Treatment options for gum disease

Treatment for gum disease may vary depending on the severity of the condition. Some common treatment options include:

  1. Professional cleaning: A dental professional can perform a deep cleaning to remove the buildup of bacteria and plaque that can lead to gum disease.

  2. Scaling and root planing: This is a more extensive cleaning procedure that involves removing bacteria and tartar from beneath the gums.

  3. Antibiotics: In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to help kill the bacteria that cause gum disease.

  4. Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be required to repair damage to the gums and surrounding tissues.

Preventing gum disease

Preventing gum disease is the best way to avoid the need for treatment. Some effective ways to prevent gum disease include:

  1. Brushing twice a day

  2. Flossing daily

  3. Using mouthwash

  4. Eating a healthy diet

  5. Quitting smoking

Gum disease is a common dental problem that can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. By recognizing the symptoms and seeking treatment early, you can help prevent further damage to your teeth and gums. Additionally, by practicing good oral hygiene and adopting healthy habits, you can help prevent gum disease from developing in the first place.

Solving the problem of bad breath

Bad breath – which is also known as halitosis – is a worrying problem that can also be embarrassing.

But there’s no need to put up with it. If you suffer from bad breath, your dentist will be able to suggest a range of solutions.

Your dentist will be able to spot problems such as gum disease, dry mouth or other disorders. That’s why it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene, schedule regular visits to the dentist and have professional cleaning.

Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day and clean between your teeth each day using floss or interdental cleaners. Don’t forget to brush your tongue, too!

If your dental check up shows that your mouth is healthy, your dentist may refer you to your family physician as sometimes bad breath can be a sign of other health problems.

If the odor is due to periodontal (gum) disease, sometimes professional periodontal cleaning is needed to remove the bacteria and plaque that accumulate. And your dentist may recommend a special antimicrobial mouth rinse.

Keeping your mouth healthy and stopping periodontal disease are essential to reducing bad breath.

So make sure you schedule regular dental visits for a professional cleaning and checkup.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last? Factors that Affect Longevity

Dental implants are a popular solution for people who have lost one or more teeth. They offer a permanent solution for missing teeth, but many people wonder how long dental implants will last. The longevity of dental implants depends on several factors, including:

Implant Quality:

The quality of the implant itself can affect how long it lasts. High-quality implants made from materials like titanium or zirconia are more durable and have a longer lifespan than lower-quality implants.

Oral Hygiene:

Good oral hygiene is crucial for the longevity of dental implants. Poor oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, which can cause the implant to fail. Brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist for regular cleanings can help maintain the health of the implant and surrounding tissues.

Smoking:

Smoking can have a negative impact on the longevity of dental implants. Smoking can slow down the healing process, increase the risk of implant failure, and lead to gum disease. Quitting smoking can improve the chances of a successful implant.

Bite Force:

Excessive bite force can put stress on the implant and cause it to fail. Avoiding hard, crunchy foods and wearing a night guard can help reduce bite force and prolong the life of the implant.

In general, dental implants can last anywhere from 10 to 25 years or even a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Regular checkups with your dentist can help identify any issues early on and prevent implant failure. By taking care of your oral health and following your dentist's recommendations, you can ensure the longevity of your dental implants and enjoy a beautiful, functional smile for years to come.
